I met Dr. Tonicia Freeman Foster at a conference in Washington, DC, in what felt like a divinely orchestrated moment. A gentleman introduced us simply by saying, “You’re tall—you should meet Dr. Tonicia.” It was lighthearted and brief, yet that introduction quietly shifted the entire trajectory of my entrepreneurship, my leadership, and my willingness to be seen.

At the time, I was carrying a vision God had given me for When Art Speaks, but I felt deeply stuck. From the outside, it may have looked like I was building, planning, and dreaming—but internally, I was overwhelmed, uncertain, and frozen by too many directions and not enough clarity. I wasn’t lacking purpose—I knew I had one. What I lacked was clarity on how to fulfill it. I was paralyzed by the pressure to “get it right,” which kept me from moving at all.

Working with Dr. Tonicia—affectionately known as Dr. T—through her Unstuck Leadership Coaching was the intervention I didn’t know how to name but desperately needed. One of the very first things she coached me through was my negative self-talk. Creative wellness was not a widely recognized lane, and I was in the early stages of carving out space as a subject matter expert in a field that didn’t yet have clear boundaries. I knew this was the work I was called to do. I knew my doctoral research would one day support my credibility and impact. But the journey between knowing and becoming felt daunting.

The first and hardest step was learning how to say—out loud and without apology—I am Verlese Pender, an artist. That identity was deeply personal and something I had never openly claimed. I had created in silence for years, tucked away from visibility and affirmation. Dr. T helped me understand that leadership requires ownership, and ownership begins with voice. Through our coaching, I didn’t just gain business clarity—I reclaimed myself.

Over time, the conversations shifted. What started as untangling fear became alignment. What once felt scattered began to feel intentional. Through Unstuck Leadership Coaching and my engagement with the Sunkissed Sunflower Queens beginning in October 2024, I found the confidence to leap rather than wait for perfect conditions. I stopped shrinking my work and started stewarding it.

Since then, the growth has been undeniable. I have presented at both a national conference and a local summit. I have sold two original pieces of artwork and exhibited my work in a gallery show. I have facilitated When Art Speaks workshops—both virtual and in person—for youth and adults. I have confirmed my first solo gallery exhibition, opening in June 2026. Most importantly, I have identified my niche—creative wellness—which now anchors my research, informs my facilitation, strengthens my proprietary framework, and allows my work to live at the intersection of art, leadership, and healing.

Dr. Tonicia didn’t give me answers—she helped me trust my own. She didn’t rush my process—she honored it. Her coaching, clearly God-led, created space for clarity, courage, and conviction to emerge over time. Because of this work, I am no longer waiting to be ready. I am walking in alignment, moving with intention, and leading from a place of truth.

Unstuck Leadership Coaching shifted my willingness to lead my business in truth. I launched my niche by fully leaning into visual art, the place where my passion had always lived but where I had previously remained hidden. I stopped compartmentalizing my creativity and instead allowed it to anchor my work, my research, and my leadership. I became the leader my vision required.
